- Midterm I is worth 15% of the grade in the course
- Format: 20 multiple-choice questions
- Exam duration: 75 minutes
- Covers material discussed in class up through 2/11/2009
Subjects covered
The first midterm will cover the material presented in class up until 2/11/2009. This corresponds to selected topics in Chapters 01–05 of College Physics, 1st Ed. by Knight, Jones & Field. These topics include:
- Ch. 01: Use of units, significant figures, vectors
- Ch. 02: 1D motion with constant (including zero) acceleration, coordinate systems, position, displacement, speed, velocity (instantaneous & average), acceleration.
- Ch. 03: Use of vectors (add, subtract, multiply by scalar, components, magnitude and angle, unit vectors, motion in 2D (e.g., independence of horizontal and vertical motion, projectile motion)
- Ch. 04: Forces and Newton's Laws: forces and what they do, mass, free-body diagrams
- Ch. 05 (sections 1-6): Equilibrium, weight, normal forces, friction, drag
Materials allowed
- You will be provided
- You should bring:
- A writing implement (pencil & a clean eraser recommended)
- You may bring a standard scientific or graphing calculator.
- You may not use:
- Devices with radio or infrared communication capabilities (cellular telephones, pagers, PDAs such as Palm Pilots)
- Audio devices (MP3 players, walkmans, etc.)
- Your text book or your notes
